Nokia, Samsung, Motorola, Sony Ericsson mobile phones and their rivals are involved in one of the few industries that truly competes on a global scale. A report by the United Nations suggests that mobile phones have spread globally faster than any other technology in history.
The United Nations report also suggests that mobiles can bring improvements to the lives of those in the poorest parts of the world, as it gives them access to information in places where the internet and landlines are not available. They also help create jobs in these parts of the world, such as selling airtime or repairing handsets.
In many third world countries, especially in the more urbanised areas, many people own a mobile phone, as the coverage is greater than that of a landline. The mobile is changing some customs in places like Africa, for example traditionally someone would have to go from village to village to let friends and relatives know about events such as births, deaths and marriages. These days this information can be passed on via mobile phones, saving someone having to walk for miles, possibly in extreme weather conditions.
