The G1 lacks the stylish feel and sleek design commonly found in top brands of smartphones. With a width of 0.62” and weight of 5.57ounces, the G1 T-Mobile mobile phone hardly matches the standard dimensions of its closest competitors, such as iPhones (0.48”) and the RAZR V3 (0.55”), though it is close to the standard for many pocket size gadgets.
The LCD screen is almost the full width of the phone and at the bottom are the trackball and five buttons. First-time users may struggle with the first and last buttons, which are positioned at opposite ends of the keyboard. The trackball is the same as those featured on Blackberry devices. It is actually of little use, given the touch screen and keyboard, but it will certainly make it easier to navigate through a series of website links. The rubbery ball is also clickable, just like a mouse; there is a volume toggle on the left side of the phone and a camera button on the lower right.
As with the iPhone, G1 T-mobile phones have 320×480 pixel resolution, though pixel density is a little compressed due to the smaller size. Nonetheless, images are of good quality in general. Low light photography is not worth pursuing, but image quality is far better under normal conditions. The overall performance of the G1 camera is not comparable with its nearest rivals and even at maximum brightness it still lags behind.
