Overview of Android Apps

During the last decade, Android smartphones have increased in popularity.  By the end of 2010, they were the best-selling type of smartphone around.  Google, in collaboration with a variety of companies interested in telecommunications, software and technology, has developed the Android OS.

Apps, which is short for applications, have been transformed into a huge commercial market.  The companies who developed Android, as well as other third parties, have seen the potential apps can have.

An important sector of this industry is that of Android sat nav apps.  A lot of new Android smartphones come with GPS capability.  Apps like Google Maps enable the smartphone to be used as a satnav device, whether while driving in a car or simply walking about.  Another popular app that uses the GPS is Google Latitude, which enables your chosen friends and colleagues to know where you currently are.

One hugely popular smartphone is the HTC Desire.  It offers a lot of functionality including a camera, HD video capability and a music player.  It also comes with a GPS as standard and has Google Maps pre-installed, as well as having a digital compass.
